I made this topic because I think this isn’t a very well-known operation from WW2.I don’t think I saw much documentary films about it (made by british or US historians).

Operation Frühlingserwachen (“Spring Awakening”) (6 – 16 March 1945) was the last major German offensive of World War II. The offensive was launched in Hungary on the Eastern Front. This offensive was also referred to in Germany as the Plattensee Offensive, in the Soviet Union as the Balaton Defensive Operation (6 – 15 March 1945), and in English as the Lake Balaton Offensive.

The offensive begun by the Germans in great secrecy on 6 March 1945. They launched attacks in Hungary near the Lake Balaton area. This area included some of the last oil reserves still available to the Axis. The operation involved many German units withdrawn from the failed Ardennes Offensive on the Western Front, including the 6th SS Panzer Army. Given the timing of the operation and the differences in German and Soviet forces, Operation Spring Awakening was doomed from the start.

Here’s some photos from the time of the Operation:

And I found some other photos here too. Most of them was taken in ’45 in Hungary.(it would be a bit too much to link them all here):

Nice pictures and article, thanks Cardmen.

Max Hansen who you will get to use in the new SS Panzer artillerie doctrine played a large role in fighting during Spring Awakening offensive with the Liebstandarte Division. He received the oakleaves for his Knights Cross here but was also severely wounded.

Yeah, here’s a picture of some of the soldiers from the Liebstandarte Division.

Funny thing btw. Joachim Peiper (who fought in the Operation Spring Awakening) once said in his anger,he requests U-boots instead of tanks because of the mud and terrible weather conditions.
